DANCING WITH THE CZARS... getting to the TRUTH!
Let's talk about the BIGGIE: A current SPD Staffer tell the public "The department is hiring and will add over 100 offers in the next two years." I wouldn't scold her had she said "RESTORE" instead of ADD officers. But even that is BS.
This past fiscal year AUTHORIZED SWORN positions = 653 cops
For THIS fiscal year PROPOSED AUTHORIZED positions - 656 cops.
And this INCLUDED the new Measure U funding that was sold to the voters as a way to RESTORE VITAL SERVICES to our city. DO YOU GET THAT? THREE?
We the People owe Councilman Darrell Fong a debt of gratitude along with support from our former council member Steve Cohn for standing up to the Mayor and City Manager and convincing them to up that number from 3 to 18. That's right Ma'am, RESTORING 18 positions to a department that sworn officer past the bone in the last three budget cycles.
Maybe you missed the NY Times article Ma'am where you'd have read this from one of our own: "For many residents, said Deputy Chief Dana Matthes, "the one time in their life they have to call the police is because their house is burglarized, and we tell them: 'Oh, report that online. We can't come out.' It doesn't send that customer service message that we're there for them."
Here's the SOURCE if you seem to doubt me as a credible source: NY Times
How many police officers does Sacramento need?
Now the next shoe to drop: Councilman Steve Hanson:
That's right - the new City Budget, including the Measure U tax revenues this year, only restored three (3) positions to the Sacramento Police Department. Thanks only to former SPD Captain Fong and now a Council member, it was increased to 15.
This is still a betrayal of voters thinking there would be more restorations of the 200+ police positions cut in the last three city budgets. Mr. Hansen opposed spending Measure U funds this year but was happy to vote yes on $1.7 million to hire arena consultants at the last council session. I'm glad the rest of the City Council saw through your spinning of the truth Sir. Oh yes, and "Crime is Down" you keep telling businesses in Midtown. RIGHT!
