When it comes to child care assistance, states vary widely in who receives assistance, the types of providers and size of subsidies, and the portion of costs paid by families, according to this National Center for Children in Poverty report. The report examined five states, and found that one common characteristic is the length of subsidy assistance. In each state, subsidized time was short for families with kids in care?—ranging from three to seven months. The proportion of children returning to the subsidy system within 12 months ranged from 35 to 58 percent.
