The Salado Creek watershed includes parts of City Council Districts 8, 9, 10, 2 and 3. So much territory and so many people with different concerns and interests make creating a comprehensive plan a daunting challenge. Here are just a few of the questions facing those of us who care about this special resource that links both our neighborhoods...and our hearts.

Proposition 3 - With $20 million at stake for the Salado and Leon Creeks, what will the city buy?…and when? Which areas will see development and of what type?

Phase 1 and 2 Hike and Bike Trail - Current funding provides for a trail from Rigsby to Houston Street...and then on to Interstate 35. When will more funding be made available?

Cleanups - The city has received federal grants to remove flood debris from some areas of the Salado, but other sections remain blighted. When will the cleanup come?

Illegal Fill - City officials say they have filed suits against dozens of property owners for illegally filling in the flood plain. Engineers say illegal fill upstream results in increased flooding problems downstream, but how long will it take to get the fill removed and who will pay?

Weak Ordinances - Even when watershed violators are pursued, most civil and criminal penalties are so small they are insignificant. How can we toughen city codes to protect this marvelous place?

Recycled Water - SAWS augments Salado stream flow with treated wastewater. Will this added water be enough to make a positive, life saving change for the creatures that need clean water to survive? Will it be enough to get the Salado off of the EPA's 303-D list of waterways that cannot support aquatic life?

SBC Center - The San Antonio Spurs have moved to their new home adjacent to the west bank of Salado Creek. What impact will this growth and development have?

With so many important changes coming to the banks of our precious creek, join your neighbors in making the Salado watershed the best it can be. Become a member of the Salado Creek Foundation today!
