25% Increase for Zoo Exhibits or Millions for Housing

At the 9 AM, Wednesday, June 30th the San Diego Council's Rules committee meeting the Council Committee will consider a proposed City Charter Amendment which could use existing tax funding for needed affordable housing.

For the past seventy years, this existing tax has gone for the Zoological Society and Animal Exhibits. But in these times, after the Zoo has established itself as a nearly $200 million/year successful enterprise, and during this budget and housing crisis, shouldn't the funds be moved other priorities? What's more critical these days - taxpayer assistance for housing people or taxpayer assistance for housing animals?

If the Charter is amended as proposed below, this would add $7 million dollars to help address the housing emergencies.

Please E-mail, call, or write in with your support for affordable housing and not to provide a 25% increase for Zoo exhibits.. Call 619-236-6980 or 619-236-6633 for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor's Office.:

Meanwhile the City is funding the Zoo at more than $7 million dollars a year, reducing Library and Park services, not fixing pot holes or buildings, and funding a major study that might include a $300 Million dollar Zoo promenade Bond and could add more traffic in Balboa Park and the surrounding neighborhoods of Golden Hill, greater North Park, South Park and add to the Ball Park Downtown parking challenge.
