ACW EPA Superfund Site Update - March 2005

Mar 15, 2005

On March 1, 2005, ACW Project Manager Caroline Robinson met with several members of the Executive Committee. Her most important announcement was that she had applied for and has received a promotion within EPA. What that means for us is our fourth new Project Manager in four years. She is Shea Jones, her credentials include degrees in Chemistry and a Masters degree from UC Berkeley (CA). She seemed very interested in discovering what our priorities are, and committee members named the following: 1) completion of the Western Gateway Redevelopment Concept for American Creosote Works as negotiated by the neighborhood and SBCA, and approved by City Council in October, 2003 2) that each private property owner deemed to have unsafe levels of contamination on their property the exact same level of clean-up by EPA 3) off-site clean-up performed to recently acknowledged and accepted FDEP standards, without weaseling of words about whether a ROD in place does or does not REQUIRE clean-up to that standard. If one superfund site within the city limits of Pensacola (Escambia Treating) receives that standard of clean-up, ACW must receive it as well. Caroline and Shea brought a computer disc of test results and we had hoped it would be post-Hurricane Ivan, but test results were from July, 2004. And so, we must wait until the last quarter 2004 testing analysis has been completed and presented to EPA by BEM and the Mobile Army Corps of Engineers before we can confirm what damage, if any Hurricane Ivan did to American Creosote Works. DNAPL extraction, which had been shut down for the greatest part of 2004, should once again be pumped from groundwater headed towards Pensacola Bay by the end of April, 2005.

Members of the Executive Committee have a major concern with continuity of site management under the circumstances of musical project managers, and won?’t hesitate to involve Congressman Jeff Miller and Senator Nelson, if he can be interested in taking up for us, to keep ACW priorities moving forward.
