SMILE President Kevin Downing comments, "our park system is one that Portland residents are proud of. There are many wonderful parks, natural areas community centers and recreation programs. This world class system is in jeopardy because of a number of pressures: Increasing use with some areas being loved to death while other areas of the city lack parks and community centers; many citizens don't know about recreation programs or don't feel they can participate; some facilities are old, cramped and dismal. These concerns and more threaten Portland's legacy of beautiful parks and accessible recreation programs. Now is the time to make our own contribution to protect this precious legacy and add to it the innovative ideas of a new generation."
