CLEAN NEIGHBORHOODS PROGRAM
NDNI Clean Neighborhoods Program incorporates clean up, blight removal and code education and, through community engagement, offers an environment for dialogue around neighborhood standards for city of Detroit residents. As neighborhood conditions improve and the cooperative relationship with the city's departments formed, we encourage citizen commitment and residential involvement in the maintenance and improvement of their quality of life. Through partnership with Goodwill Industries and the City of Detroit Department of Public Works, NDNI deployed a Clean Neighborhoods team in five neighborhood areas during the summer of 2011. The team removed litter from commercial corridors and on entryway streets and around a school on a weekly basis. Through funding from PNC Bank we were able to place Clean Neighborhoods trash barrels in these areas and our team kept them serviced and disposed of trash at the city bulk waste sites. "The Clean Neighborhoods Program and the Clean Team have done a great job on sprucing up the major commercial corridors of Woodward, Oakland and East Grand Boulevard," stated Lisa Johanon, Executive Director for Central Detroit Christian CDC. "I saw the before and after, and they were hardworkers who did a fantastic job. Thanks for making that happen." Education about municipal code around property maintenance and issues that relate to blight and neighborhood disturbance, the "rules" that our city charter mandates, is a key piece of our program.
