Diverting recyclables from the waste stream is the responsible thing to do as a community for many reasons. First, it extends the life of our landfill and conserves natural resources. Second, recycling saves your tax dollars in the form of a reduction in tipping fees paid at the landfill to tip garbage.
Recycling is more than just an activity - it is a way of thinking that becomes a way of life, once the commitment has been made. Recycling also does not end at the point of separating your recyclables from your trash. As a consumer, you should look for items made with recycled materials, with a minimum of packaging, which can be recycled again. It's called "closing the loop" or "the four r's," which are:
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE AND RETHINK.
