I am working on a project to get kids riding bicycles to school. I have two kids in the Maritime Academy and the Urban Institute of Mathamatics. They went to school by school bus and now go by public bus or I take them.
It has always been a concern of mine that they are many bennifits to riding to school.
There is a big health problem with obesity or just lack of exercise. Riding to school offers exercise without even realising it.
Public busses are not free and becomming more expensive.
Riding to school means that they take on more responsibility for their safety on the road.
I grew up in Guyana and we rode to school all the time. It was one of the most fun times riding with my buddies.
There is also the green initiative that is sweeping the nation.
I am looking for people who are interested in this project to respond to this thread. I have spoken to the principal at the Urban Institute of Mathamatics and she loves the idea. Also staff members at Jeff Klein's office think it is worth investigating further. There would be need for the local precinct to be involved for road safety and possible bike lanes and street signs.
There is the potential for this to foster a more related community.
I will be attending the next community board meeting and can disscuss this in more detail. I would like to start this at UIM. and then roll it out to any interested schools.
