Skycrest Neighbors

March 2002 - Meeting Notes!!!

Your trees, and Clearwater Arborist who is a neigbor

We had a great meeting.

Alan Mayberry, the Urban Forestry Manager(and a Skycrest neighbor) for the City of Clearwater delivered a most informative and valuable talk about our local trees. He also handed out information on pruning and a pamphlet on how to choose an arborist. Do not just hire someone who knocks on your door. Tree trimmers need to be qualified. (This pamphlet is available from the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service.) Alan also gave thanks to neighbor Patrick Day (Baxter the dogs "father") for asking for and caring for ten new trees along the Cleveland Street.

April 13th, 2002 Farmers' Market @ Crestlake Park

April 13th, the City of Clearwater's Farmers' Market will come to Crest Lake Park from 8 AM until 1 PM. COME ONE, COME ALL! It would be nice if we had some local vendors who could sell their handmade crafts or even produce.

There is a $15 charge per space but a tent is provided. Perhaps 2 or 3 neighbors could share a table (which they need to provide). The $15 fee helps pay for newspaper advertising. Please consider doing this.

Call Bob Fernandez to register at 461-7674 if you are interested.

April 20th, 2002- Annual Neighborhoods Day @ Crestlake Park

Our picnic is to be held Saturday, April 20th from 10 AM until 2 PM. We can use help in distributing fliers to each house, as well as donations for charcoal, plates, hot dogs, buns, condiments, chips, sodas, napkins, balloons, etc.

Please call me at 442-5856 or JoAnna Siskin at 442-0096 if you can help in ANY way.

We want it to be fun, just like last years event. There will be children's games, a real fire truck and more. Any ideas? Call us! We can use your help.

April 27th will be The Great Tree Giveaway at Moccasin Lake Park in honor of Arbor Day.

The group decided to send a letter to Governor Bush asking him to veto the bill proposing the telephone rate change. We felt it was unfair to charge extra to those people who use their phones only for local calls and emergencies. Many people in lower income brackets would be hurt by this.

It was pointed out to residents that the City soon will be changing its water purification system to Chloramines from Chlorine. There are two groups of people who should take special precautions when using chloraminated water--kidney dialysis patients and fish tank owners. The City has put out a pamphlet about the "new water." You are invited to call 562-4960 if you have any questions.

A short report was given on the voting in the last election. Skycrest is made up of portions of precincts 513, 515, and 518. The low percentages of our population voting are rather embarrassing. We need to do better. Why should the City listen to us if we do not even bother to vote? This is a privilege we are fortunate to have in this country. We should exercise it.

Please share this with your neighbors who do not receive e-mail. It was a GOOD MEETING! We missed a lot of you. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD! We all live in this neighborhood of Skycrest together.
