Volunteers Needed for Denver Kids, Inc.

100 Students in need of Adult Volunteers

Denver Kids, Inc. (303-405-8133) is seeking adult volunteers to be a positive influence for more than 100 students in their counseling and mentoring program. Many of these students have been waiting for months, if not years, to be matched with a volunteer mentor.

The 700 students in Denver Kids are elementary through high school aged young people who are attending the Denver Public Schools. They are generally from father-absent homes and from families with income at or below the poverty level. A majority of students are Hispanic (54%), followed by African American (29%), Caucasian (12%), Native American (3%) and Asian (2%). They are good kids needing a little extra support to help them to succeed. The Denver Kids program relies heavily on men and women from the Denver Metro area to volunteer as Friends who serve as positive adult influences through one-to-one relationships with boys and girls, respectively. We've been around since 1946.

A professional counselor teams up with the volunteer Friend and his or her student to help support the relationship and to provide continued encouragement for the duration fo the youngster's education in the Denver Public Schools. They work as a team to encourage their student to complete high school, enhance their self esteem, and develop the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens.

If you are interested contact Peter S. Banda, Volunteer Manager, 303-405-8133.
