Police and Fire Memorial Needs Contributions

Dec 20, 2004

Every day, year in and year out, law enforcement and firefighters risk their lives to keep the Fort Worth community a safe place to live, conduct business and raise a family. And many pay the ultimate price ?— life itself ?— in giving their all.

Since 2001, the Fort Worth Police & Fire Memorial Committee has been working to develop a memorial to all past, present and future Fort Worth law enforcement officers and firefighters who have lost or will lose their lives in the line of duty.

The committee is relying 100 percent on donations to complete the memorial by Spring 2006. Because the memorial will be completed only with the support of the public, the committee needs your help.

In the course of the past three years, the committee already has:

* Proposed the conceptual design of the memorial. This is an ongoing process and will not be completed until an artist is selected and work is authorized to begin. The design will be completed as soon as donations and funding are obtained.

* Negotiated a memorial site contract with the City of Fort Worth and come to an agreement on maintenance of the memorial. Negotiations with the city began in 2002 and concluded in January of 2003.

* Developed and obtained approval of the committee and organization?’s bylaws. These bylaws include specific criteria for the inclusion or exclusion of deceased officers and firefighters on the planned memorial.

* Researched the histories of the Fort Worth City Marshal?’s Office and the Fort Worth Police and Fire departments to obtain the names of officers, marshals and firefighters killed in the line of duty. This activity was begun in 2001 and is an ongoing process.

It is anticipated to take several more years to complete. Sergeant Kevin Foster, the memorial research director, is completing this work. The committee continues to raise funds to complete the memorial?’s design so that construction may begin.
