Preserving our History ?•Celebrating our Future

A Note from the President

Seasons Greetings! Not the holiday season, but the beautiful season of spring! We are all looking forward to seeing the buds, the green grass and most of all our neighbors out in their yards preparing for summer.

With spring around the corner and yard sales, street parties, and newsletter updates, we need your help. We need a few volunteers who would be interested in being block leaders. The role is really very simple. The main objective would be to let us know what is going on for the newsletter, for example: New neighbors, babies, and donation/volunteer opportunties. Also you would hand out last minute flyers, and attend the bi-monthly meeting. Most of this can be done by simple observation and quick emails.

I believe we would need about 12 block leaders if my memory serves me. We already have a few block leaders in place, but we need more. I would like anyone who is interested to please respond to my email below. This is a great opportunity to become involved in your community without too large of a commitment.

Regards,

Jason W. Schnurr

RECIPE CORNER AND EXCHANGE

A place to ask, a place to share. Have you ever had the "BEST" salad ever or the tastiest apple pie at the neighborhood picnic? Now is your chance to ask for recipes and share special family favorites.

Instead of sharing a recipe in this newsletter, we are putting out the call for all of your favorite summer dishes!

How about some savory veggie dishes, or a refreshing salad that screams summer! Does your family have a favorite picnic recipe that is easy to pack, easy to eat on the go?? Email: Cjonas65@mac.com. Use the Title Line "Recipes."
We will post these on the Southmoor Gardens Yahoo group.

Now get digging through your recipes!

Cool-season lawn calendar

April

?• Make any needed repairs and tune-ups to mowers and sharpen mower blades.
?• Apply and water in crabgrass preventer when redbud trees are in full bloom (usually in early to mid April).
?• Refrain from watering unless the turf shows signs of needing it. Tough love now will result in a more heat and drought-tolerant lawn in the sweltering summer.

May

?• Fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer if you water your lawn during the summer.
?• Spot treat broadleaf weeds with a spray or use a fertilizer that includes a weed filler.
?• Continue to refrain from watering unless extremely dry. Force the roots to grow deep to get to moisture.

June

?• Mow high and let it lie. Raise mower height to 3 - 3.5" and mulch the clippings back into the lawn.
?• Apply second round of crabgrass preventer by
June 15 ?— unless you have used Dimension (dithiopyr) or Barricade (prodiamine) for the April application, as these two products normally provide season-long control with a single application.
?• Late June through July, apply white grub preventer if grubs have been a problem in the past. Read and follow all fertilizer and pesticide label directions!

SAVE THE DATE!

Southmoor Gardens Neighborhood Picnic
May 31, 2008

The neighborhood street party will not be on 67th Terrace as earlier reported. Please stay tuned for a revised location and event information as it developes.

Do not worry, regardless of location, we are anticipating another record turn out as we plan the event. We have reserved a band, prepared a menu, invited the fire trucks and the policemen from our ward, as well as activities for the kids.

We will have a special mailing going out at the end of the month regarding the new location and details for all the entertainment.

Get ready to mix, mingle and meet new friends and visit old friends. Keep your eyes open for more information in an upcoming flyer!

The last two street parties have been wildly successful, and we look forward to seeing everyone and watching the neighborhood grow into a fun and cohesive group.
