Update on Heatherwilde

Feb 01, 2004

On Dec 11th, the TX Dept of Housing & Community Affairs (TDHCA), board met. One agenda item was to determine if they should grant another extension to the Heatherwilde project or stop funding. SWCA members Maria Magallenez, Dale Armwood, Annie Gonzales, and Carole Abitz attended and spoke against any further extensions. State Rep Ken Mercer also spoke against it, reading a letter which mentioned that Councilman Perez also opposed it. Despite numerous personal pleas from John Adams & Carole Abitz to Councilman Perez asking that he provide his own letter stating his opposition to the extension, he refused. As expected, TDHCA again ignored the community and supported the for-profit developers.
Those of us who attended were shocked to hear the outright lies being told by many of those speaking in favor of the project. While we stuck to the truth, our efforts were futile.
