GOOD NEWS –THE SLOs ARE BACK

Dec 06, 2000

In early October the LA Police Commission approved Commissioner Dean Hansell?’s motion to reinstate Senior Lead Officers (SLOs). The Rampart Independent Review Panel addressed the Commission and gave ?“unequivocal?” support to ?“fully reinstate Senior Leads.?” Commissioner Hansell noted that this issue has provoked more public outcry than ANY other, including the Rampart scandal! The support of Senator Richard Alarcon, Councilman Joel Wachs, and other the City Council members, and the Los Angeles Police Commission were also instrumental. But it was the demands from the public?—an outpouring of letters and emails from individuals and neighborhood associations such as ours (we sent some to the Council and the PD last May) ?— that fueled the determination of our elected representatives to get the SLOs back.

It is likely to take two years before all the SLOs are in place. Many people express concern that a slow timetable will compromise the success of the program. It is also important that the PD give the SLOs back their authority and scheduling flexibility, some office space and a voice mail system, and release them from their duties as Basic Car Coordinators.

We in SASNA need to know what?’s important to our Neighborhood Watch group. Think about this for the next meeting. Then we can take the time to send a letter or e-mail to the Police Commission with our specific suggestions.

FYI: Our SLO is David Cordova. He can now be reached at his cell phone number, 213-509-9644.
