I recently call city hall to find out if I could put a privacy fence up on my property. They said only it was 25 feet setback from the front property line. I told them that there was several houses on my avenue that was not setback 25 feet. She said it was a code violation.
So important note to those with privacy fence less than 25 feet from sidewalk. Code Enforcement will soon visit you!

As it should be.
We can put up a fence closer to the sidewalk than that. A three foot fence that is appropriate in a neighborhood. We don't want people walling off the front of their house like a guarded compound. A privacy fence should start at the side of a house and enclose the back yard. One of the best parts of this neighborhood(and the reason some of us bought here) is the differing styles of the houses. I hate to think how it would be if some of the houses were blocked off.

4 foot fences are ok
Not to confuse the issue or anything but I believe that a 6 foot fence must be 25 feet from the front property line. A fence up to 4 feet in height is acceptable within the first 25 feet.
