Margo Fischer, challenger, and Frank Farcas, incumbent State Representative, District 52, were informative guest speakers at the NSNA General Membership Meeting held last evening. Both addressed questions regarding their positions on education, the environment, downtown and suburban development,tax issues, Assisted Living Facilities in our neighborhood, and other issues. If you were unable to attend, you may want to talk with your neighbors who attended about the specifics of these opponents' positions.
In terms of NSNA information, Lane Lastinger reported that the Neighborhood Design Review special committee of five has met with an independent architect and CVS and is working toward compromises that may lead to a retail project that is compatible with the neighborhood. Lane reported that the CVS group seems most open and flexible regarding the exterior facade and least flexible regarding the square footage of the building. Our committee has proposed fewer parking spaces, 40, rather than the proposed 67. More information will be available later this week on the negotiations. Let's thank the volunteer committee and recognize the negotiations as a positive result of neighborhood activism.
It was also reported that, although the NSNA newsletter editor resigned, you can expect to receive an edition of the newsletter for July due to the volunteer work of Carl Lovgren. The NSNA board is exploring the costs and feasibility of having a professional newsletter company provide the layout of the paper with NSNA members and board still providing the content of articles. The newsletter production consumes many hours of volunteer work--just ask Tim Baker and John Mitrovka--so professional production might be a good option if affordable.
We heard a report from the Traffic Committee that the proposed traffic calming for 1st Street North north of 22nd Ave. is on the City ''A List'' and may begin in early 2001, whereas the revised traffic calming for Beach Drive is on the ''C List'' and has no start date. There are other neighborhoods that have not yet received City attention to traffic calming, so, priority lists were developed in the interest of fairness. Jackie Guensler continues to chair the Traffic Committee.
