Museum of Fine Arts Expansion

Here is more information about the proposed Fine Arts Museum expansion: In
1961 the City deeded to the Museum the south one-half of Straub park from 2nd
Avenue North to the alley between 3rd and 4th Avenues North, between Beach
and Bay Shore Drives North. The proposed addition to the existing building (as shown in the Summer 2000 issue of Mosaic) more than doubles the size of that building with a three-story wing on the north side. Further design detail will tell us whether the addition could enhance the beautiful Palladian facade.

We too enjoy and support the Museum of Fine Arts. We have been members since its founding. But we are concerned about the loss of green space on the waterfront for a large three-story building (50,000 square feet proposed) some of which will be devoted to parking and storage. It is our hope that the planners will reduce the size and height of the addition in consideration of all those who enjoy the waterfront.

Thanks for posting, John and Marty. How far into North Straub Park will the addition extend? Where can we take a look at the proposed plans, site plan, etc.? Are there any hearings coming up with any City depts. for approval of the project or has it been approved? Is there a group of people like yourselves who are concerned, and are you meeting as a group?
