omitted facts

I was in a hurry when submitting my last reply so here are some facts which might surprise some 5th ave opponents!

1) The North Shore Neighborhood Plan permits(FOUR)4 story development on the NORTH side of 5th Ave. and the CBD 2 district (south side of 5th) permits TEN (10) STORY development. SOOOOO...maybe we ought not protest this FIVE story development too loudly. Another developer could cast an even greater shadow.
2) The Plan further permits THREE story development on the SOUTH side of sixth avenue and 35' (2 1/2 story) developemt on the North side of sixth and on to the end of North Shore boundries on 30th.
3) This was done to do precisly what is needed and desirable to protect the quality of North Shore housing stock. That is to provide for a TRANSITION from downtown, which is after all a City, where buildings are customarily built to the sidewalks. A very logical stepping down of building height flows from this arrangement.
4)This course was adopted by the North Shore Planning Committee precisely because such an arrangement ALREADY EXISTED...i.e., Presbyterian Towers (10? stories) down to three story 1920's buildings on our side of 5th.
5)Style....this is a very subjective matter but I see STRONG design ties within this project to Deco elements already seen in our neighborhood. We embrace neo-Colonial, neo-Mediterian Revival, neo-Victorian, etc., so what pray tell, is the problem with neo-Deco?

I urge everyone to become educated on this matter because when development in St Petersburg is blocked, even tho a project is fully compliant, with NO varainces required, then we might as well put a fence around the city.

Surrounding Properties

Very good points ! and a couple of us went down and walked the Lofts area. Surprise !? it is surrounded by commercial properties- with the exception of one home. Apartment buildings, ALF's. office combo apartment buildings, a florist, more apartment bulidings circa 1950's (?).
those of us who went down to look hope that the officials of North Shore will not oppose this. It has never been discussed or voted on and it is not iin our boundaries.

Sally Lawson is not a member of the NSNA, and her views do not represent the NSNA. Please refer to an additional posting by me, which informs visitors to this site that the Board has not taken a vote or position on this issue because the project is outside the boundaries of the neighborhood. The current Board has a process that requires letterhead,the President's review and signature on any letter that goes out representing the views of the Board or Membership. No letters go out representing the Membership unless a vote has occurred at a Membership Meeting. I hope this is helpful.

Twenty story high rise

You are close. Just a little too far west. The twenty story high rise is going in on the S. W. corner of Beach Drive and Fifth Avenue Northeast. It will be a hotel. How about them apples.
