Read at City Council meeting May 1:
WHEREAS, The Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association has undertaken the preparation of an application for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, which included written and photographic documentation of 2, 975 contributing historic structures, objects, sites, brick streets, hex block sidewalks, granite curbs, and tree canopy, encompassing 425 acres; and
WHEREAS, The application project was led by neighborhood residents Kate Hoffman, Steve Lange and Rob Wertz who coordinated a volunteer effort approximating $80,000 worth of professional architectural and cultural resource management time; and
WHEREAS, The neighborhood was granted status as a National Register Historic District by the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, National Parks Service on February 20, 2003; and
WHEREAS, The North Shore / Old Northeast National Register District represents the most extensive mixture of residential architecture in the City of St. Petersburg, including a high percentage of architectural styles that typify the Florida Land Boom era of the 1920's, and reflects the broad settlement patterns of the City; and
WHEREAS, The North Shore / Old Northeast National Register District is the second largest district in the State of Florida, second only to the City of Key West, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Based upon evidence presented in the ?“Economic Impact of Historic Preservation in the State of Florida?” published by Florida?’s Division of Historical Resources, the City of St. Petersburg will benefit from an increased ad valorem tax base and strong reinvestment in the neighborhood.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICK BAKER, Mayor of the City of St. Petersburg, along with the St. Petersburg City Council, do hereby recognize the significant accomplishment of the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association and ask all citizens to join in honoring the importance of the North Shore / Old Northeast National Register District.
