What's wrong with Watson's

Posted in: Historic Old Northeast
Watson's has a certain 50's kitschy quality, the individual letters on sqaure signs, the blue lines and that sorry-looking tiger mascot. And the name, "FoodTown", you can't make up this stuff. With their other stores, it is something of a St. Petersburg tradition. Not the stuff of postcards, but a real part of our city. Picture better lighting and landscaping ... not so bad. Future generations will ask us how we let it go.

I've heard unsavory persons "hang out" at Watson's, to buy large bottles of beer, packs of schmokes, and make phone calls (perhaps to their stockbrokers). These folks will likely not care as much as I do of Watson's loss, and will enjoy their vices just as much at CVS. Such is life.

Good point

You make a good point. Watson's with different clientele and merchandise, along with a few trees, and we'd have a gem.

Just changing the building to a huge
store, with a hidden parking lot, which sells beer and wine and cigarettes, etc. may make a new store just a HUGE WATSON'S.
