Building Permit? Do I Need One?

Sep 23, 1999

Is that your answer to the question; ?“Do I need a building permit??” Maybe that is your answer because you
don?’t really know, or you may be in doubt. Well, the answer is easy to obtain, just call the Pikes Peak
Regional Building Department at 327-2880.

Don?’t want the hassle of getting a building permit? Well, you may get away with not having one, but you
may not be able to sell your property if it?’s discovered you didn?’t have a building permit for your home
improvement project. Also, if a building inspector were to discover you did not have a building permit for a
deck that you spent valuable time building, they could make you take it down.

Bottom line... Building permits are required for certain items and are meant for everyone?’s safety. They
are also indicate if you are violating any city zoning codes. The following are items that are NOT required
to have building permits: retaining walls less than 4 feet tall, concrete patios, private sidewalks, playground
equipment and tree houses. As you can tell there are some items that don?’t require permits. But if you are
not sure, all it takes is a phone call to the number mentioned above to find out.

After all, wouldn?’t you hate to see that lovely retaining wall or beautiful deck come down or keep you
from selling your home? Especially when all it takes is a simple phone call to find out how to get a building
permit.
