S.I.B.H.A. Member Fights Code Enforcement

Jul 28, 2001

Eighty-Four year old Mary Coughlin of Lincoln Gardens who is a member of The Stock Island Business and Home Owners Association is taking on Monroe County Code Enforcement. Code Enforcement wants her to cut her fence down in front of her home from 6 feet to 4 feet. Mary asked The Stock Island Business & Home Owners Association for help with her problem. She is now a regular member of our monthly meetings which take place at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month. We explained what she needs to do to get this out-dated ordinance changed. The association has enlisted the help of Commissioner Dixie Spehar.
Only a few people have been cited for having fences that are over the code requirement of 4 feet. However, the majority of home owners on Stock Island as well as Key Haven all have fences over 6 feet. Why hasn't everyone been cited? That is the 64,000 Dollar question. If you want to read more about Mary take a look at the Friday July 27 issue of Key West The Newspaper. Mary is on the front page. Stay tuned for more information about this story because it will effect everyone in Monroe County if this ordinance isn't changed.
