No Fire Protection For Stock Island & Key Haven

You'd better get to Scotty's right away and buy yourself a fire extinguisher, a bucket of sand & a extra long garden hose. Between 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 A.M. the Stock Island Volunteer Fire Dept. is not manned. If you get a fire between those hours you nearest help is the Big Coppitt Volunteer Fire Dept. Those folks should be there in say 15 or 20 minutes. By that time the trailer would have burned to the ground. Or if it's a million dollar home at Key Haven, well it won't be liveable, so start looking for a motel. As for daylight hours, there is one paid fireman on duty from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. He's got to wait until several volunteers show up at the fire station on Stock Island. Time? Know one knows for sure. 10 minutes? A lot could happen during that time. We need the residents of the lower Keys to address this issue. The money is there, somewhere.We need at least three paid professional firemen on duty 24/7. No excuse will do for me. Come to one or both of our meetings at the Baptist Temple on Feb. 12 & 15, 2001. 7:00 P.M. The church is located on Stock Island across from the Stock Island Volunteer Fire Station near the Tom Thumb on Maloney Ave.
