On Tuesday, July 27, 2004, David Willmon, of Promise Landscaping, (256) 883-5588, stopped by to give us a proposal for doing the remaining work on the front entrance. Promise Landscaping has recently completed work in our neighborhood for both Anne Marie Harry, at 1417 Oak Ridge Drive, and Chris Perkins, at 1413 Oak Ridge Drive, with good results at a reasonable price.

We showed David our present plan, which was approved by a vote of those in attendance at the Special Neighborhood Meeting in 4/04. David suggested one significant change, in that we consider Magnolia Trees and lower growing evergreen shrubs on either side of the Magnolia Trees in place of the Crepe Myrtles and Arbor Vitae Cypress Trees behind the entrance wall. The advantages of the Magnolia Trees versus the Crepe Myrtles would be:

- Evergreen tree with green foliage year round rather than bare sticks in the winter
- More density of foliage to provide a better barrier from the highway noise and light
- Taller Magnolia Trees provide a better fit/perspective in relation to the tall trees which remain on either side of the entrance
- The height of the Magnolia Trees to be planted will be taller than the brick wall
- Blooms have a nice scent
- Provides a different look from the entrance to the Summer Place neighborhood to our east, which already has large Crepe Myrtle trees at their front entrance

The remaining plan still includes fresh mulch and annuals/perennials to be planted in front of the existing shrubbery. Total cost estimate for the entire job, labor included, is $1,250.00, and the work can be accomplished in one day.

The proposed change in trees appears to make sense, and we would like to move ahead with the landscaping as soon as possible. However, since this is a change to previous plans, the ORHA Board would like to give anyone with a serious concern the opportunity to voice their objection by calling Mark Coby at (205) 437-0058, not later than Thursday, July 29, at 3:00 p.m. If we don?’t receive any significant objections, the landscaping plan will be amended to include Magnolia Trees rather than Crepe Myrtles and Cypress. Thanks for your continued support of this project.
