School Starts this Month!

DIRECTOR'S CORNER:
The Board of Directors continues to work with the current landscaper to resolve some of the common area landscaping challenges and maintenance concerns. The Board met with the landscaper at the July Board of Directors meeting pending resolution of these concerns.

The Monsoon season means landscape maintenance issues. We did not experience major damage from the July 14 storm. (The storm that effected Sky Harbor Airport.) Some branches were down, but no trees were lost.

The water feature has been a challenge this summer. The float at the water feature was not working properly and has now been repaired. Because the float was not working properly, the water was not circulating properly. We have also discussed with the landscape company the care of the trimmed landscape materials around the water feature. It is our hope that with the new dye and other maintenance issues that have been addressed, that the water feature will look as expected.

SCHOOL WILL START SOON
The children will return to school soon, so please watch for them as they go to and from school, and play afterwards. Remember to be watchful of the school zones, too. School zones have a 15?MPH speed limit and passing (even if the road is wide enough) is not allowed.

OVER 50? WANT TO SOCIALIZE MORE?
In July, Camille and her group had an evening of Pizza at the NYC in Gilbert. In August they attended the dinner-theater show "Annie". They will continue to meet monthly. If you are interested in socializing with fellow Stonecreek residents, call Camille. GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS. Contact Camille at 480-926-4412 after 5:30 P.M. or at Camille@ci.gilbert.az.us.

DONATE YOUR USED BICYCLES FOR CHRISTMAS
Now is the time to think about people less fortunate than ourselves. Here is a way that you can get rid of used bikes, make a donation, and save yourself the time and trouble of disposing of them all at the same time.

Call Tony Bernot at 480-892-7505 if you have any bicycles that you want to get rid of. They do not have to be in working order. Tony will come to your house, pick them up free of charge and give you a Gilbert Community Action Program (CAP) receipt that you can use as a tax deduction. Tony restores the bikes and gives them to CAP to give to needy children at Christmas time. Stonecreek has donated many bicycles over the last years. Maybe we can keep the tradition up. Call Tony, make his day and make a needy child happier this Christmas.

HAVE UNWANTED DUCKS?
Some Stonecreek homeowners have found ducks living and breeding in their back yard and pools. Once the ducklings "arrive", it is hard to get rid of them until the ducklings are old enough to fly. A call to the East Valley Wild Life (480-814-9339) will put you in contact with people who will lovingly remove the ducks and ducklings. It is a volunteer service, so there is no charge, but donations are appreciated.

GIVE KIDS A CHANCE ? WATCH THEM AROUND WATER!
Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under four in Arizona. Most of these tragedies occur in a child's own pool. But with alarming frequency, children are also drowning in buckets, toilets, bathtubs and ponds. Anyone with children, anyone with a pool, and any relative, babysitter or friend ever given the responsibility for watching children needs to be aware of this tragedy.

The following are tips on how to help prevent these accidents:
Prevent Drowning

Never leave a child out of supervisory eye contact in or near a pool, not even for a second. There is absolutely no substitute for constant adult supervision. If you must leave the pool area, take your child with you.

Do not place objects (e.g., chairs or tables) near the pool or spa fence that could allow a youngster to climb over or fall in.

Keep toys, particularly tricycles away from the pool. A child playing with these could accidentally fall into the water.

Never leave children unattended around places where water can pose a threat.

5-gallon buckets
bathtubs,
toilets,
ponds,
canals,
any area of open water.
Secure Pools
Pools and spas are attractive to children, and children must be kept away from them without adequate supervision. A fence, wall or natural/artificial barrier should completely enclose your pool or spa. All gates or doors leading from the house to the pool area should have a self?closing and self?latching mechanism that protects against unauthorized entry and use. (The inside latch should be above the reach of toddlers or young children.) Windows and pet doors must be made inaccessible to small children.

Learn CPR (Cardio?Pulmonary?Resuscitation)
CPR instruction is available from a variety of sources around the Metro Phoenix area. Check your local yellow pages under first aid for available classes. (Charges vary.)

... that the Superstition Springs Mall opens its doors at 6 a.m. for walkers?

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT
SUPERSTITION MALL?
"The refashioning of Superstition Springs Mall promises a sleek sophisticated look.

Westcor Shopping Centers' vision of a new, refined atmosphere at Superstition Springs Center is about to be realized. Plans to refashion the center's interior and exterior will build upon its strengths, with new and interesting elements for the benefit of shoppers.

'The subtle yet imaginative redesign will bring new features to the center, including new flooring, an updated interior color scheme, additional living room style seating areas and 50,000 square feet of store area for new and expanding stores. And, that's not all! Elements will include an improved play area, refurbished rest rooms and expanded stores. The first phase of the renovation began in March, and will be complete in November. During this phase, shoppers will notice many changes at the center designed to create an ambiance of understated elegance, which will be highlighted through a range of differing textures, including glass. wood and painted metals.

"In fact, you may have noticed that the food court renovation has begun, and the old flooring is already gone! Shoppers who visit the food court on a Saturday night between May and August will receive a special meal deal coupon book, with discounts and offers for Saturday night meals.

"The second phase of the renovation will begin in December, and will be complete in late 2003. During this phase, the renovation will advance from cosmetic, architectural enhancements to more extensive store repositioning.

"SSC will begin to cluster same-category stores in close proximity to one another at the center: This will help you find your favorite stores all in one area. For example, if you're looking for a children's store, all will be located in the same region of the mall. Or if you need an item for your home, you'll find all of the center's stores that fit your need in one area. This clustering will allow you to better navigate the center and anticipate where to park to make your shopping excursions a lot easier.

DESERT SAM TO BUILD NEW 'UNIVERSAL ROOMS"
"Desert Samaritan Medical Center will build the country's first Surgical Transition Intensive Care Unit featuring universal rooms.

"'A universal room can be modified to meet patient's progressive surgical recovery needs,' said Rhonda Anderson, Desert Samaritan Chief Operating Officer. 'In the eastern United States, the concept of the Universal Room has been very successful in caring for cardiac patients.' Desert Samaritan will be the first facility west of the Mississippi River to construct a hospital unit using the universal room concept, and the first in the country to use the concept in caring for surgical patients.

"Following completion of the Surgical Transition ICU in January 2003, a patient requiring intensive care following surgery could be admitted to the new unit where state?of?the?art equipment allows hospital staff to deliver the highest level of care.

"As the patient progresses through the recovery process, the room can be modified to provide telemetry care and acute care without requiring the patient to transfer to another unit. Currently, these patients can be transferred to four or five different rooms during their hospital stay. Clinical equipment is designed to be easily accessible behind custom?designed headwalls and be out of sight when not in use providing a less clinical feeling environment for patients and their families. Adjoining each room is a family area that includes a work desk with Internet access, and ample space for a family member to stay overnight if needed in chairs that can be transformed into single beds. 'The creation of a family space in these new rooms, continues to emphasize the importance Desert Samaritan places on involving the family in the care and healing process to the degree they feel comfortable,'" Anderson said.
