Sunset Neighborhood Loose Dogs

Posted in: Sunset - San Antonio

My biggest, complaint with this beighborhood is the amount of DOGS RUNNING LOOSE!!  I can't stand it.  I feel like I live in some third world country with the amount of dogs I see running loose during any given day.  Two days ago I tried to take a nice RELAXING walk around the neighborhood with my infant and I saw 7  loose dogs, one with a gaping, bloody leg wound, and the 8th dog I saw was DEAD and STIFF with flies eating it's face lying in the middle of the sidewalk on Sunset Pl.  This is no exaggeration and no joke.  A dog was running loose, got killed by a car and was placed on the sidewalk to apparently rot.  Seven loose dogs is way too many for me.  I don't feel safe walking around this neighborhood becasue of the amount loose dogs.  That's unfortunate becasue I would like to be able to stroll around my neighborhood without fearing a loose pitbull might attack me. Some might be stray dogs but others look like they belong to someone.  All day long while people are at work their dogs are roaming the neighborhood.  And might I add, several of these loose dogs ARE NOT FIXED, which means in no time we will have even more and more loose dogs roaming the neighborhood.  I have picked up and taken battered looking dogs to the shelters from this neighborhood more than once.  I have called animal control several times over a stray dog lurking right outisde my FRONT DOOR barking at my own dog and at my baby who he must have mistaken for a dog or cat. It's not safe for anyone and especially anyone's children.  What about these kids that stand out at the bus stops every morning or walk home from the bus stop? Who knows if these dogs have their rabies shots or if they already have rabies or if they are dangerous enough to attack a child on their way home from school.  It's not like that hasn't happened before!  We see it on the news all the time. "Child mauled by dog".  Dogs can be very dangerous and it annoys me to no end that there are so many loose dogs running around Bastrop Creek and Dalhart pass and Sunst Place, etc etc etc.   From now on if I see a loose dog I am calling 311 no exceptions.  All day long while people are at work their dogs are running loose and I'm tired of it.  If you have a hole in your fence you need to stop being lazy and fix it! If you are too irresponsible to own a dog then don't own one!  I would love to see this neighborhood free of loose dogs but we need everyone's help.  If you see a loose dog please call 311 and have it picked up.  Yes the owner's have to pay to have the dogs removed from the pound but hopefully this will teach them a lesson about being responsible for their neighbor's safety.  It's not the dog poop or the drool or the fact that they walk in my flower garden...all of these things don't bother me.  It's the SAFETY issue!  Dogs can attack and kill.  Cats..they don't attack or kill anything beyond lizzards so stray cats are not a concern of mine.  Everyon needs to pitch in and save the neighborhood from being taken over by dogs at large.

~Concerned about dog attacks~

Well I called 311 and they said they won't be picking up any dogs any time soon since all the kennels are full due to the Hurricane Ike rescue efforts. SO, looks like that's no help either.  If you call the police about a dog they tell you to call 311.  You get the run around.  I guess we should just form a militia and take care of the problem ourselves.....
