Sullivan's Gulch Neighborhood Association

Neighborhood Block Party

Oct 20, 1999

by Steve Larson

Neighborhood volunteers successfully produced the second annual Sullivan's Gulch National Night Out block party on August 3rd. This national event is intended to remind us that using our streets and sidewalks is the best way to keep crime low. Approximately 200 people from the neighborhood gathered on a Tuesday evening at NorthEast 19th between Clackamas and Halsey. Mayor Vera Katz opened the festivities with a strong pitch for neighbors involving themselves in their communities. Discovering that it was her birthday, the neighbors sang "Happy Birthday" to the Mayor. Commissioner Jim Francesconi arrived later and sang the praises of active neighborhoods like ours. Free hamburgers, hot dogs and gardenburgers complemented the wonderful salads and desserts from the neighborhood. Four bands entertained the gathering and over 40 door prizes, donated by area merchants, were awarded. The following merchants generously donated door prizes or other aid.
