April 2008 Newsletter
PRESIDENT?’S MESSAGE
Happy Spring! It?’s very nice to see neighbors outside and flowers blooming. It also means our Red Flag Fridays are not far away so please read the ?“Social?” section of the newsletter for dates to mark on your calendar.
Thank you to Jim Ryerson, Joe Walker, Greg Leader, Barbara Steinbrey, and Dawn Gilgoff for coming to our last meeting to talk about the Montgomery Leadership Academy in which they have all been inaugural participants. They all had a lot of enthusiasm about the program. When the application process starts for next year, they all indicated they would be happy to talk to any neighbors about the program who might be considering applying.
Thank you also to Donna Anderson for agreeing to be our new Treasurer. Many thanks to Mike Buschelmann who has done the job for multiple years!
Please read the section below about the Island Lighting project. I truly appreciate the help, enthusiasm and participation of so many neighbors on this project. I think lighting the signs and trees on the islands will be an improvement to our neighborhood both from the perspective of safety and beauty. We will be using low wattage lighting and feel that it will be an improvement over the solar lights which we tried, without using excessive amounts of electricity. Thank you to Matt Trumpy who has volunteered many hours of his time to work with contractors to get quotes, organize demonstrations and the implementation! Many of you have asked about irrigation to the islands. We did get quotes for this and at this time it was cost prohibitive.
Also note the date for planting and cleanup of the islands. It won?’t take much time if we have lots of volunteers. Sally Trumpy puts many hours into keeping the islands looking nice all summer so please come help her get things started this season!
As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me at 469-0007 or suzannetufts@msn.com
Respectfully,
Suzanne Tufts
MONTGOMERY VOTED #1 CINCINNATI SUBURB
Montgomery was selected as the No. 1 suburb in Cincinnati according to the April issue of Cincinnati Business Magazine. Montgomery was third in 2007. A variety of criteria were used including homes prices, schools, safety, etc. One quote from the magazine, ?“The draw of the Sycamore Schools is what first lures families here; the city?’s many attributes are what cause them to stay.?”
ISLAND LIGHTING
Thank you to everyone who came out in the horrible weather to place their vote on March 19th. Blowing snow was not what I expected. I appreciate the effort and enjoyed meeting many neighbors.
We had sufficient turnout and the proposal to light both islands overwhelmingly passed. We are in progress with the electrician and hopefully will have the electricity installed soon. We had huge support in the way of actual and pledged donations to go ahead and light both islands. For those of you who have already made a donation, thank you. For those of you who were interested in making a donation but waiting for the process to complete, please send any donations to our new Treasurer:
TWCA, c/o Donna Anderson, Treasurer, 8765 Tanagerwoods Drive
Please mark that it is for the island lighting. We truly appreciate your generosity and have been pleased by the enthusiasm shown by so many neighbors.
The Paynes, who live at the Weil Road entrance island, have been opposed to lighting the trees on that end. The sign will definitely be lit and we are going to go ahead and light the trees at that end. However, if after a period of time, they are still opposed to having the trees lit, we will make modifications to that island in recognition of the fact that their house faces that island.
Again, thank you to all of you who participated in the whole process. We truly appreciate your patience and support and hope everyone enjoys the result.
DUES
If you have not yet paid your 2008 TWCA Dues, please send a $35 check to: Donna Anderson, Treasurer, 8765 Tanagerwoods Drive
ISLAND PLANTING AND WATERING HELP NEEDED
Planting season is here again. Saturday, May 10 is planting day at our entrance islands. If you want to help plant, bring your gardening gloves and a hand shovel to the Weller island at 1 pm.
The plants on both islands cannot survive without summer watering. Sally is asking families to volunteer for 1 week of watering one island. We need lots of volunteers to help keep our islands beautiful! Please email Sally at MRTSCT@aol.com to sign up for your watering week. Thank you so much to the families who have already volunteered!
SPRING CLEANING TIPS
In honor of Earth Day, the following ideas to help with disposal of items come from the Hamilton County Environmental Services booklet Once is not Enough available at Montgomery City Hall.
Household hazardous waste collection has begun and runs until November 22, 2008. Hamilton County residents may drop off the following items: paint, pesticides/fertilizers, solvents/thinners, lawn/pool chemicals, cleaners, household/auto batteries, prescription drugs, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, florescent bulbs, gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil and thermostats. Check out www.hamiltoncountyrecycles.org for details about drop-off locations and hours of operation.
Did you know? UPS store locations will accept styrofoam peanuts for reuse. Most Kroger stores accept plastic grocery bags for recycling. Most dry cleaners accept wire clothes hangers for reuse. Nike will accept used athletic shoes for recycling (www.nikebiz.com for details search reuse-a-shoe ).
REMODELING SOON?
Building Value is a non-profit re-use-it center that accepts new and used building materials. Check www.buildingvalue-cincy.org for details. They accept items such as lumber, doors, cabinets, sinks, bathtubs, pluming fixtures, hardware, and flooring. They have a pick-up service for large items.
Freecycle.org is a way for residents to register (Cincinnati Eastern Suburbs group) and post items they are giving away and other residents contact them to pick them up.
CLEANING OUT OR TIDYING UP?
Consider participating in our upcoming neighborhood garage sale. What a great way to get ride or unwanted items and make a little money. Donating unsold items to any of the following organizations:
Goodwill Industries (771-4800) accepts toys, clothing, furniture, small appliances, housewares, jewelry, books and seasonal goods, Community Land Coop (721-2522) accepts unwanted appliances in working order, FreeStore/FoodBank (241-1064) accepts clothing, small appliances and nonperishable food items, Matthew 25 Ministries (793-6256) accepts clothing, shoes, sheets, blankets, new personal care items even travel sizes and new first aid supplies.
