Abate the Abatement!!!!

An Open Letter to David Carpenter

Dear Mr. Carpenter:

My name is John Penry, and I have lived in Northern Hills for over 15 years.

It has come to my attention that a Technical Advisory Committee has made
recommendations to the City Council to have heavy jet aircraft departures
routed over Northern Hills. As you are the head of the Airport Noise
Abatement Advisory committee, I would like to inquire why the traffic has to
be re-routed at all. I would also like to know why Northern Hills is not represented in the Technical Advisory Committee.

When I first moved to San Antonio, the airport was at it's current location,
and when we looked for our new home, we took note of the flights taking off
and landing at the airport. It is easy to recognize the approach area, as
these are indicated by an absence of any buildings, commercial or residential. Just north of this area is the Gunn Sports Park, followed by
an Stone Ridge Subdivision, an industrial park, and finally the Eden
Subdivision. We decided against Stone Ridge and Eden because we knew of the
flight path of the airport. All of these developments were built under the
current flight path. I feel sure that property prices were reduced because
of it.

Now, after 20 years, a group has proposed to you to have the flight path
moved to Northern Hills. It appears that you are willing to assist in their
efforts. This is incredibly unfair. I do not want to see the investment I
have made for the last 15 years devalued. The residents of other
neighborhoods were aware of the flight path when they purchased their homes.
To change this after all these years would be a horrible mistake.

I will attend the meeting to be held at the Waterford on Thousand Oaks, on
April 18, 2000. Will you also be in attendance?

Thank you,

John Penry

If anyone has noticed lately in the past wk that there has been more air traffic over us. I live on a hill and I can watch the planes going over us and there usual flight paths. It seems to me that the flight paths have changed and they are getting closer.
If the city could pass the law for the planes to take of at a much steeper incline (like other city's do). I do not think that the problem would be as bad as it is.

Airport Abatement

Mr. Carpenter:

I suppose you have good reasoning to even purpose to reroute the planes departing over the Northern Hills subdivision, but is it valid to the homeowners there. We have lived here for 23 years and think it is a great neighborhood to live in. However, if this does pass, we may have to rethink strongly about moving out of San Antonio period. This is just another example of the shoddy way in how things are being forced on the public in the San Antonio area.
