Barking Dogs

Posted in: UHRA

Very sorry to hear that but lucky you only have the problem during late night hours. It seems that we hear our neighbor's dogs barking constantly...can't sleep, can't talk on the phone - can't even hear ourselves think.  It is incomprehensible that barking nuisances are not enforceable and that surrounding residents have to go through so much protocol (Pasadena City District Attorney's Office) just to maintain peace and quiet for the neighborhood as a whole.  We found it offensive that the Humane Society/Animal Control's response to our years of concern is, "Dogs bark --- that's just they do."  That's not necessarily true.  We have a dog and neighbors have commented, "Wow! Didn't even know you had a dog...its so quiet." Good luck to you...we can even get cooperation from other neighbors.

Do you know where the loud dog barking at 6:45 every morning is located? I will sign a petition against this one and any other dog barking early, lte or excessively. My email is louddogarroyo@gmail.com

Have any of you people tried talking to your neighbors in person, instead of plotting against them with your snoody HOA friends? If you ask your bothersom neighbor politely and directly to let the dog sleep inside, and the noise stops...everyone wins. I agree with animal control, the only dogs that don't bark are pretend dogs. thanks

Unfortunately, people who let their dogs bark incessantly are generally inconsiderate people to begin with.  The factors that lead the dog to bark constantly are not something they want to do anything about - dogs like these are generally bored, neglected, poorly trained, etc.  That is why it's generally futile to talk to the dog owners.  People who are considerate, competent dog owners don't let their dogs bark constantly.

If you have a barking dog problem, take the anonymous approach.  Leave a polite, unsigned letter in the owner's mailbox.  Like it or not, you have to instill some anxiety in these people.  For all they know, you are an attorney, a police officer, a weightlifer, etc.  Then escalate from there as needed; for example, call animal control.

In an ideal world, you could talk to owners of barking dogs and they would politely apologize and do something about it.  But it doesn't work that way.
