The North Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Committee met in August for an update on the developments going on in Desert Ridge.
First of all, the Reach 11 project is being prepared and implemented by the City of Phoenix Parks and recreation department. They have not done much to develop the site recently so we have not seen much.
The Marriott hotel project closed on August 17, 2000. Watch for entrances from Pathfinder Drive and Deer Valley Road. This is a 950-room hotel with a 12,000-sq. ft. clubhouse, 125,000-sq. ft. of meeting space, health spa and two golf courses. It is the largest Marriott resort in the world. Watch for the opening of the golf courses in a year and the hotel to be open in January 2003. The same company that built the Hyatt at Gainey Ranch is designing it. If you like the Hyatt, you will like this resort.
The new center that is being built by Vestar, south of Deer Valley Road has started grading and construction. They completed the tree-moving project, which takes almost two months. All the trees and cactus were boxed and moved. The main anchor of the complex is a 20-screen AMC theater with stadium seating. This center will be an entertainment and shopping complex. On the north side will be the retail shops and mall type atmosphere. On the south, along Mayo will be the big box retail stores like Target and Wal-Mart. Along Tatum will be an Albertsons, Osco and an upscale Danny?’s car wash where you can buy a $30 bottle of wine and get your car washed at the same time. A new hamburger franchise to Arizona, In-and-Out Burger is also locating there. Watch for this to be completed in November of 2001. It is the same design concept as the new center on the Southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Bell Road, but with a more Arizona Biltmore center open area with trees and walkways.
Even though Desert Ridge is to the north of us, we are impacted by what happens there. In the next 12 months, there will be an additional 1500 acres auctioned off in several pockets to in the Desert Ridge area.
