I. Ken and Linda Martin, North Andrews Gardens?’ residents, Oakland Park Volunteer Program (VP) chairperson (Ken)
A. Volunteers are needed, but must be trained in advance to be utilized in event of a natural disaster. Volunteers can choose where and how much they want to contribute (i.e. neighborhoods, community events (Octoberfest, Youth Day), fire station, communications, etc.). VP emphasizes communication, coordination, and cooperation. VP participants will receive training in CPR, First Aid, and FEMA Incident Command System (IS-100 and 700). VP participants will also receive an ID badge, liability coverage, t-shirt, orange vest, and first aid kit. Oakland Park assumes all costs of training, supplies, and insurance. Applications are available on-line for any Oakland Park resident 18 years of age or older: http://www.oaklandparkfl.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={D9F409C8-A420-48D6-815B-91D6AB5A590C}
Meetings are held every other week for a couple of hours and all are not mandatory. You can complete the IS-100 and 700 trainings on-line and present your certificate of completion to the VP in lieu of meetings.
Contact Ken, if you need more information at (954) 772-1264.
B. As North Andrews Neighborhood Association (NANA) members and volunteers, Ken helps identify neighbors in need and neighbors willing to assist those in need. Within their neighborhood, Ken leads a group of volunteers who will assist those in need by putting up storm shutters and clearing debris in preparing for a hurricane. After a hurricane, only neighbors who?’ve completed the VP certification, can assist their neighborhood by bringing water and ice to their neighborhood, communicating with the proper agencies, checking on neighbors, clearing their streets, etc.
