June URA Meeting Attracts New Members!

Jun 22, 2006

The June meeting of the URA on Monday was blessed with some new faces! The attendees at the May meeting had tasked themselves to all bring at least one new person with them to the June meeting and it looks like it worked. With 18 people, the meeting room at the Cumberland was barely big enough to accomodate.

Here's a recap of the meeting:

Skip Courtney introduced himself to new members and spoke to the purpose and mission of the Urban Residents Association.

All introduced themselves by name and downtown location.

New website was introduced. All pages and capabilities were discussed. www.neighborhoodlink.com/nashville/ura (see more under open forum)

Updated on homeless coalition meeting. Possible speaker/topic at next meeting. Possible to get PDF and share, or post on website.

Updated on CBID meeting. Explained what CBID is. Discussed that in upcoming meetings we will be getting involved in initiatives.

Discussed Home Owner Associations getting integrated with URA. Use for best practices, resources, and to increase membership for URA.

Discussed new website as great forum to let residents know of local merchants and new business coming into the area. Rhonda volunteered to spearhead a sub committee where by local merchants have a relationship with the local downtown residents. Possible discounts for locals a maybe. More information to come as research is done.

Guest speaker Jason Powell introduced himself and his campaign. He is running for the State House Representative. (D) Spoke of issues he is passionate about. Funding for schools, home care & safety. Very excited to be involved in URA and committed to come back to meetings. www.powellfortennessee.com

Ideas and issues discussed in open forum:
* Adding school information for website
* Adding online register to vote link to website
* Adding downtown details to website
* Adding your profiles to the website
* Adding links and new discoveries to the website
* Making the new website a forum for communication between meetings
* Noise level and ordinances at Exchange location
* Who to call when you see homeless sleeping on the street (perhaps in an unsafe situation)

Next months meeting will be on July 17th at the Courtney Loft - 219 2nd Avenue North, Second Floor. Look for the Red awning on the Market Street Buidling just north of Church Street.

See ya there!
