Landmarking the Claremont: Your Support Needed!

The Claremont Hotel and grounds are one step closer to being designated a landmark and thus preserved for future generations, thanks to community
pressure and commitment. On July 9th, the Oakland City Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board (LPAB) unanimously adopted a resolution that recommends landmarking the hotel and grounds. However, this is just the first major step in the process. Next, the resolution goes to the Planning Commission and then to the City Council.

Similar efforts to landmark the Claremont Hotel have failed in the past for lack of community involvement. If you don't want to see the gardens replaced by 165 new rooms, a three story parking structure, and condos and time-shares along Claremont Avenue, now is the time to voice your opinion that landmarking is an important way to preserve this piece of regional heritage! Contact the Planning Commission and copy Jerry Brown and Jane Brunner, to voice your support for landmarking the hotel and grounds. Please make it
clear that you urge the Planning Commission to adopt the LPAB's resolutions
to landmark hotel AND the grounds. Unless the grounds are protected, much of
the character of this gem will be lost.
