Can I have to many pets?

Aug 15, 2006

When it comes to owning animals in Fort Worth, there is such a thing as having too many.

According to city code, no more than three dogs and three cats may be housed in one residence. This law was established not only to protect animals but residents as well.

The Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Division will respond to neighborhood complaints about residents housing more than the allowed number of animals. If a resident is found in violation and does not agree to comply with the law, citations could be issued.

Residents can file for a permit to keep more than the allowed number of animals ($10-filing fee). After filing for the permit, a hearing will be set to determine whether conditions in the home are appropriate for the owner, the animals and adjacent neighbors.

Permit packets are available at the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Center, 4900 Martin St.

To report violations or to ask for assistance with animal problems, contact the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Division at 817-392-3737.
