Ripple Glass, Inc. is a local company that has placed collection containers throughout the Kansas City area to make glass recycling easy for all residents.
The program collects clear, brown, green and blue food and beverage containers only. The colors do not have to be separated and labels do not have to be removed. Rinsing is not essential but can help keep down bugs and smell during storage. There are large dumpster size containers for dropoff within a few miles at businesses such as Berbiglia at 79th and Wornall, and Mission Shopping Center at 82nd and Mission.
Most local curbside and drop-off recycling programs stopped taking glass over the last few years for many reasons. Broken glass contaminates materials with the highest value like paper, threatens worker safety, and damages collecting and sorting equipment. In most curbside programs in which glass is collected, over half of the collected glass is unsalvageable, and ends up in the landfill. And revenues were lost due to long hauling distances to out-of-state processing facilities.
Ripple Glass has a processing facility in Kansas City to handle all the glass that’s collected. The local Owens Corning fiberglass plant will be a primary end market for the glass.
