Plastics recycling in the Kansas City metro has expanded to include numbers 1–7. Unfortunately, confusion still exists about what types of plastics are now acceptable in local recycling programs. Previously only number 1 and number 2 plastic bottles were accepted.
The expansion includes most food and beverage containers and excludes most other types of plastics. The numbers 1–7 are the resin codes that appear in the “chasing arrow” symbol usually on the bottom of the container.
This increase in recyclable plastics applies to all curbside, drop-off recycling centers, and commercial recycling services offered by AbitibiBowater, Inc., Deffenbaugh Recycling and Town & Country Disposal. Contact your recycling service to find out if it is accepting these additional types of plastics.
Following is a list of plastics accepted and not accepted:
Acceptable – #1–#7 food and beverage containers (water bottles, yogurt tubs, takeout containers), lids, and product packaging (blister packs, clam shells).
Not Acceptable – Any plastic item that does not have numbers 1–7 printed on it, Styrofoam™ products, plastic bags, disposable plates, cups and utensils, prescription bottles, hazardous substance containers, building materials, sheet material, toys and outdoor play sets.
