WASHINGTON PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION
P O Box 1233
Fort Lauderdale, Fl 33311
June 12, 2003
Our meeting started at 7:47PM with prayer by Sallie Tillman-Watson.
Mr Giles motioned to approve the May 8, 2003 minutes with corrections. We voted and they were approved.
Eugene said tonight?’s meeting would be abbreviated for the installation of our Officers for the Civic Association and the Neighborhood Enhancement and Preservation Council.
Joy from Code Enforcement said they have had over 200 vacant lots cut. Mrs. Brunson said the vacant lot on the east side of her home needs to be cut. Mr Habbersham said the lot next to him also needs to be cut. Joy took the addresses and will check them. Eugene said there is a guy who rides a bicycle on the north side of the canal in our neighborhood who is helping people to dump on vacant lots. He gave a description and asked if anyone sees him to call BSO. Caroline said someone came into her yard and pulled the phone box off the house. She called BSO. Eugene said the he wants to get the Street and Block Captains together and do a cleanup for the summer through Adopt-A-Street.
Eugene welcomed the new residents to our neighborhood, Vickie Williams and Ernestine Eubanks. He said that we have some new homeowners that are having problems with their homes that were built by Sean Jones. The insurance company has referred them to their contractor. Sean will not return their calls. Yvonne said for them to go to the website for Florida to the Business and Professional Regulation Department and to download the form to place a complaint. They will need to provide a history with names and dates of what has happened in trying to contact the contractor. She will assist anyone who needs help completing the form. Some residents are having plumbing, electrical and foundation problems in homes that are less than two years old. When a contractor builds a home he does the inspection of the work not Broward County. When you personally do the work then the County inspects the work. Sallie said from working with H.O.M.E.S Inc. that the paperwork to close the mortgage is done prior to the homeowner moving in. She said that it needs to be changed so that the closing is done after completion of the home and before the homeowner moves in. This way the homeowner would be able to do a walk thru and see problems so they can correct them before closing. Mr Habbersham said they could also contact the Better Business Bureau and place a complaint. Eugene said we have to put a stop to these contractors doing bad work in our neighborhood.
Warren questioned what about the things that you can?’t see when they do the walk thru?
Yvonne said we would have an engineer and architect working with us. Warren said the sewing class would start tomorrow. He said they have room for 60 kids from six to 17 years old for summer camp. He said that kids come from different areas come and it will be on a first come first serve basis. They will require birth certificates for children six years old. The camp starts on June 23rd and ends on August 15th.
Meeting adjourned.
