The Center was founded in 1967 by members of the Ohio Avenue Congregational Church (corner of Ohio Ave. and S. Washington St.). These dedicated community members established the non-religious neighborhood center upon the merger of their congregation with another church. They observed that a community center would strengthen and revitalize the "neighbor helping neighbor" in an increasingly mobile society. Many of the original volunteers, their children and grandchildren continue to participate in the Center's programs.
A federal grant in 1976 made it possible to expand the program with an addition to the original 100-year-old building. The grant required that the building be deeded to the city. WSCC continues to rent the facility from the city. The Center has received through grants and bond issues renovation of the building to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, remodeling of the kitchen and renovation of the preschool playground.
The Washington Street Community Center has been privileged to be of service in helping to build a strong community for more than 33 years. This length of service has created a positive impact on the neighborhood and generated sensitivity to the needs of area residents. WSCC stimulates community change by providing a gathering place for civic improvement and encouraging civic vitality. The Center has maintained a reputation of being "customer friendly" with the ability to build and empower the present and future leader of the community.
