New shelter opens its doors after a four year search for home

The West Columbia Gorge Humane Society has just reopened at their new location in the Industrial Park. Mary Mabry searched for four years to find a new home for the shelter, and the location may be new, but someof the best things have not changed. The dedication and commitment of the organizers and volunteers is still just as strong, and the fact that this shelter does not euthanize adoptable animals. Their policy is to find a loving home for each animal that nees their help. Over their prior years in operation they have helped over 500 cats and 200 dogs. They have spay-neuter grant to help elder and low-income pet-owners pay for this important care. They have placed pet care books from the ASPCA in local elementary schools and they are working with CRITTERS, an organization that takes pets to visit nursing homes and other locations where senior citizens gather. Pet adoptions are $50, a real bargain since all animals will have been spayed or neutered, will have been given rabies and FELV Distemper shos (if old enough), tested for feline leukemia, treated for fleas and mites AND microchipped!

Local volunteers dedicated to keeping shelter running smoothly

Many local citizens have stepped forward to volunteer their services, talents--and money, to help the shelter get what it needs to keep its doors open and run smoothly. Steve Hansdon of SJH Remodeling donated his time to build a deck and ramp required by the county so they could open. The shelter does all it can to keep the bills paid:
They rent live traps, they collect aluminum cans, they sell puppy pouches for $20, and sell fruit baskets at holiday time.

A rummage sale is planned for April 20 at Scout Hall in Crown Park. Word is you'll find more than the usual household items there. Bikes, skates, antique items, and lots of other usable treasures will be for sale. Clothing is not accepted, but if you have other items to donate (what a way to do your spring cleaning!) call the shelter at (360) 835-3464.

Your help is always needed, always welcome.

Would you like to meet with school students and talk about pet care? Do you want to help show animals from the shelter to prospective owners? Maybe lighting up the smiles of seniors on
"pet day" appeals to you. If so, your help is welcome. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, large and small. Of course, if you have more money than time these days, cash donations are always gratefully accepted, and are completely tax deductible. The shelter also gratefully accepts memorial donations in the name of your loved one. To join the newsletter mailing list, volunteer a bit of time or money and make a difference in the welfare of pets in your community, contact the shelter today.
