Top 10 List for Helping Make Waveland Park a Clean Neighborhood

Apr 13, 2004

10. Report problem properties to the Action Center. Neighborhood inspectors will check out and take corrective action when property owners violate city codes ranging from parking cars on front lawns to illegal accumulations of trash and debris. A copy of the form and contact information is in this newsletter.

9. Please clean up after your pet if you exercise the animal and it takes care of outdoor business on someone else?’s property - including the property we all share along streets, sidewalks, and school grounds.

8. If you are discarding an old appliance, don?’t just take it to the curb and expect it to go away. You need to purchase a $35 appliance sticker for each item. Make arrangements with Public Works Department?’s special large item pickup service by calling the Public Works Department?’s 24-hour customer service number-283-4950.

7. For hazardous waste and items which cannot be taken to the landfill with regular trash, use the Des Moines Metro waste disposal sites described in the gold pages of your Qwest telephone directory and at the www.mwatoday.com web page or call 244-0021.

6. Take advantage of the Waveland Park Neighborhood Association?’s ?“Dumpster Day?” which this year will be the morning of October 30.

5. Follow the Public Works Department?’s rules for the new waste containers - the hinged lids must be closed. If you might happen to have more than fits in the container, do some compacting and rearranging to be sure your lid stays shut or put something aside for the next week. You can put additional items out but you will have to purchase a Large Bulk Item or Extra Trash Tag sticker in order to have extra item(s) picked up.

4. On recycling pickup days, if it is going to be windy put heavier items on top to avoid having paper and other items blow out of your containers. Crush lighter weight plastic or metal items so they are less likely to be caught by the wind.

3. Observe the time rules for trash pickup. It should NOT be taken to the curb until after 5:00 p.m. the evening before your collection day and cannot be on the street for more than 24 hours.

2. If there is trash or debris in your yard, pick it up and don?’t discard anything on someone else?’s property.

and the number one way to help keep Waveland Park clean....

1. Always tuck a plastic bag into your pocket when you go out for a walk and pick up some items others (especially littering drivers) have failed to dispose of properly to keep trash in its place and NOT in our neighborhood.
