10/3/99 Broomfield Problem

Silent but watching

To WW:

How about initiated a revote on Douglas Bruce's stupid amendments that have had hog-tied
state and local governments?

That would concern a lot more people than -- sorry, again -- the rather small jail that is going
over a mile from your homes. I was transplanted to California for a few years and lived near
Folsom, CA where you will find the state of California?’s Folsom Prison (which for houses very
hard-core criminals, not the minor offenses that a county jail would ordinarily house). The
beautiful homes, which are in the $300,000 range, are practically backed up to the prison fence
and the only crime they worry about is somebody stealing a car. They even have built schools
nearby. I know it sounds preposterous. But, the statistics are there and can be obtained from
City of Folsom and/or State of California if you are really interested in the true facts. I would also
be very surprised if this was the only prison within close proximity (less than a mile) in the nation.
But I have been acquainted with NIMBY?’S before and know they usually will not listen to the
other side if their facts are different.

And while I am sharing with you knowledge I have of California I would also like to tell you
that the famous Proposition 13 which is what the Tabor Amendment in Colorado is drafted after
has had a devastating effect not only on the state and local governments, but most sadly the
schools. If we can?’t afford to educate our children, this nation is doomed. I don?’t believe in
outrageous taxation, but I know from experience you get what you pay for. If you hog-tie the
local and state governments, you will pay for it in the very near future by cut-backs on local
services and most sadly teachers, supplies, and over-crowded schools.

I have tried to give your group the benefit of the doubt that you were not being vindictive
and spiteful over the jail issue, but you continue to disappoint me.

Welcome

Margaret, we are glad to have you here. I am especially glad to hear from people who have political awareness. Obviously you pay attention to things and care.

I wish I knew more about the Tabor Law. I'm not from here originally, and i only heard of it in the last year. I will try to take an evening in the next week to do some research on it.

I am sure it is confusing for people reading this discussion board to know the line WE draw between the jail issue and the repeal issue. We DO care about the jail - many of us at this discussion board live in Countryside (hence Countryside HOA discussion board). We care about it for all the same reasons we have been yelling about for several months .... and you've probably heard them all.

But repeal is a larger issue. We feel that the campaign waged in 1998 for Ref 13 deliberately kept information from the voting public, gave false information to that public, and so wrongly manipulated the vote. In a nutshell, that campaign was carried out in an unethical way. And we feel the voters should have another chance to vote - this time with ALL the information.

Now, that is my opinion, and roughly the opinion of CVELG. There are others here who strongly disagree with me (and us). I believe I have more understanding, empathy, and respect for the opposing views because of dialog had here. We exchange ideas, facts (or things perceived as facts), questions, answers, etc. I think it's great. I hope you will stay with us. Maybe we will gain understanding from your input and you will come to see us through differnt eyes. Thanks for joining in!

Sure Thing BBW

It has been published that released prisoners, if they have no pre-arranged ride, will be taken to the nearest bus stop (or nearest Broomfield bus stop). We have NEVER been told SPECIFICALLY which bus stop they are refering to.

If the bus route from that stop goes south onto Simms, the next stops are in Countryside - one of them about 300 yards from my house. Our neighborhood is thick with children, including my 10 year old daughter. (This evening when I pulled into my drive way I counted 13 kids playing in yards, walking on sidewalks, riding bikes, etc.)

It stands to reason that with each new person introduced to our neighborhood who has compulsions to hurt children - there is the increased risk that they will do just that. I don't perceive attacks to be something that will happen regularly. But ANY ONE attack on a child could be avoided by NOT introducing the perpetrator to our children.

And hence, my question about where prisoners will be transported to.

A Thought

I just wanted to share a thought that has been in the back of my head through out our work to repeal.

IF an "overwhelming majority" of people (62% originally) REALLY do want the county, then why would Broomfield CC even CARE if there is a re-vote. If they are confident that people support what they are doing, why NOT re-vote; wouldn't the results just subtantiate their direction.

It's not like CVELG is sponsered by big $ corporations. We will not wage a big $ campaign. We do not get positively biased or significantly supporting news articles.

Probably, voters in other parts of the state will vote about like they did initially - by flipping a coin and, slightly more often, saying yes than no.

The only meaningful difference may happen in voters of the 4 affected counties. And if BFCC thinks those people are happy with what's being done - why sweat it.
