The P.N.P. is a program that was initiated by the Phoenix Police Department, designed to organize and coordinate the work of citizen volunteers who desire to take a more active role in reducing crimes in thier own neighborhoods. This program builds on the Block Watch program by engaging citizen volunteers to participate in crime prevention by actively patrolling their neighborhoods. The training provided to these citizens by the police department emphasizes the use of non-confrontational methods to observe and report criminal or suspicious activities to police. Citizens do not have police authority, but in effect, act as additional eyes and ears for the Phoenix Police Department. The two-way communication that develops as a result of this program is the basis upon which a long-term partnership is established.
The purpose of the Block Watch program is to teach neighbors how to protect their neighborhood by watching out for each other. The program will encourage you and your neighbors to actively participate in cooperation with the police to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in your neighborhoods.
This awesome program is administered by the Community Programs Unit and each of the six precincts. It began in 1994 under the name Block Watchers on Patrol and by only 1995 an astonishing 5,468 hours of patrol time had been donated by volunteers. And that rose to 11,600 hours in 1996. In 1999 the the program was renamed to Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol.
