According to horticulturist Calvin Finch, now is the best time to reduce fire ant populations in your neighborhood. It might not get rid of your ant problem today, but it will in the long run. Apply a slow acting bait insecticide such as Amdro, Logic, or Rapid Fire Ant Killer. Spread it over a wide area according to the instructions on the label. If you do this now, the experts say you'll have a 90 to 95 percent suppression of your ants by springtime. Convince your neighbors or the whole neighborhood to do it at the same time and you will minimize the use of pesticides and have very effective control.
