Are you a Good Neighbor? (March Issue)

Apr 10, 2000

The following are some thoughts from a variety of sources on being a good neighbor. If you have more to add, send them by e-mail to woodsofshavano@yahoo.com or call the association office at 492-2701 and leave a message.

* Keep your lawn mowed and edged and your shrubs trimmed. If you don't like yard work, consider hiring a neighborhood youth or a neighbor who enjoys yard work.

* Place your garbage in sealed bags to keep trash from falling into the street during trash pick up; if possible, wait to put trash bags/cans out until the morning to keep animals out of it. Pick up trash in the gutters, street, and yard around your home ?– especially after city trash collection on Tuesday and Friday.

* Clean up after your pets and keep them on a leash. Be sure to let your dog in when it starts barking.

* Meet your neighbors ?– just go over and introduce yourself.

* Join your neighborhood association, read the newsletter, and attend board meetings to stay informed.

* Volunteer time or services to a community organization, church, or school.

* Adhere to community covenants and city code requirements when remodeling or adding to your home.

* Keep porches, yards and driveways free of toys, tools and clutter.

* Follow the speed limits within the neighborhood.

* When you pick up your morning newspaper, consider placing your neighbor?’s newspaper at their front door.

* Park your vehicles in your garage. If you must park your driveway or in the street, try to limit the number of vehicles and the length of time they are parked there.

* Watch out for the safety of area children and other residents. If you see someone suspicious around, notify the police.

* Turn on your outside lights at night to promote safety.
* Try not to play loud music or have loud conversations in your backyard late at night.

* Offer to help elderly, disabled, single parents, and people who live alone.

By doing these and other neighborly acts, the Woods of Shavano will continue to be a great place to live!
