DSL vs. Cable Internet

The buzzword with Internet connections is BANDWIDTH. That's where the two services differ the most. Think of bandwidth as a freeway. With cable Internet you're sharing the freeway with a varying number of people depending on how many people in your area are also using service at the same time. The more people there are on at the same time, the more your service is going to degrade.

With DSL your not sharing your bandwith with anyone else, unless you share your Internet connection with other computers inside your house. Cable Internet usually can offer you a faster Internet connection during off-peak hours, but your DSL service will be more reliable.

Additionally, if you're not computer savvy and will require customer service the SBC is probably your way to go...and as someone else stated they have great customer service and response time.

You are partialy correct. Once you leave the DSL connection from the house, your are still sharing that freeway with everyone else that is on the net, be it a Cable connection or a DSL connection, they both lead out to the same freeway, all controlled by SBC. The more people on the Internet, the slower your speeds will be. Wyandotte cable internent is sitting at an average of 1.4 megs on dowloads and I do not think that SBC DSL is at that rate, but I do not know for sure. As far as customer service, Wyandotte Cable also has great customer service and response time. It's like anything else though, all depends on what time of the day you report a problem as to how soon someone can come out.

Cable vs. DSL

As someone pointed out it's all about bandwidth.

I've got Comcast Cable at work and it's incredible. 3 meg download. But the reason it's so good is that it's only used during the day.

When the kids get on at night it falls to a crawl.

We've got SBC DSL at home and I have a Linksys cable/DSL router which allows up to 4 computers simultaneous internet access. We have two. Our speed is constant and never slows down. We like it. But we don't download any movies or music. We actually buy that stuff.

Now here's where we veer from the norm.

No one, and I mean no one knows our DSL email address or our cable email addresses.

At work all mail comes to us@ourwebsite.com and at home it comes to an account at Great Lakes Internet Service.

For $40.00 per year, per account you can have email through them. AND (trumpets) they offer full SPAM (you control) and virus scanning.

We have never received a virus attachment and get less than 3 spams that slip through in a month.

I guess it depends on your needs.
