When disaster strikes, sometimes the destruction is so severe that the community’s resources are overwhelmed. That is when GEMA steps in to help. GEMA cares by coordinating response efforts, and GEMA may ask the Governor to declare a State of Emergency in order to make state resources available to the afflicted area. GEMA also creates disaster field offices and disaster recovery centers where victims learn about federal, state and local aid programs and benefits.
