Yes! This is an invitation to those of you who think you might want to become involved in theatre - within the African-American Community - on an continuous basis.
The actors in this theatre will be semi-professionals. That is, they will not have professional, unionized status. However, unionized or not, these individuals are dedicated to doing their best in one of the most difficult, yet, challenging forums -- the forum of a live stage performance.
but who know that the monetary rewards will be small. In short, ain't nobody gon' get rich.
I estimate that the amount of time it will take to build a good acting troupe, and reliable theatrical reputation will be at least 5 years.
In the meantime, minority actors who have been theatrically trained in the surrounding universities, or who have accumulated much experience on stage with the other theatres in town (or, who wish to) will have another alternative for somewhere to go to get and keep those acting ''muscles'' in shape.
You. Yes. You with your talent to make clothes; handle a business;volunteer pro bono work for a struggling theatre; write grants; conduct publicity campaigns; establish and maintain good public relations campaigns; build sets; handle the lighting; handle the soundboards; write plays; act; sing; dance, etc.
You are who we're looking for.
Just like it takes an entire village to raise a child, it will take all of these kinds of people to build this theatre so ''they will come''.
We will meet July 9, 2000 at 2pm, at the YWCA, 65 South Fourth Street.
Come and join the raising of the ''building''. Help us to make a difference in the community and make some dreams come true.
