I have been a RN for over 20 years, I graduated from the University of Iowa. I believe we should always put ourselves in the other person's shoes and try to view things from their side. I also believe we should help others who need it most. Give to others and don't expect anything in return. The satisfaction comes from knowing you made someone's day, you put a smile on their face, you made a difference in their life!.
Why do I care about getting books to people. Let me tell you a story:
I I was working in a Nursing Home that had a so called "Library" or activity room for the residents
to sit and visit and watch TV. The only thing in this room was a TV, a few boxes with puzzels in them and a few magazines. One of the residents was going to have a garage sell and her family
members were setting it up. The next day she tells me she had her daughter brought in a book case to put in this room. Three days later she ask's me, if I had seen this book case she had donated. I looked on the differn't floors and could not find it. I then called down to the front desk and they said they would take care of it. One week later this same resident is asking me if I found out anything. She stated " I donated that book shelf for our floor and if we can't get it up here I want my family to take it". After many days of trying to help her locate this book shelf it was finally brought to this floor. BUT IT WAS EMPTY! NO BOOKS! NONE! So I told her I would bring some books in from home. I also went out and bought a few board games. The next few days, several residents were in this room reading and putting together a puzzel. THIS IS WHAT I'm talking about. GIve these books to someone who is going to truly appreciate them and make good use out of them. I have search for books for several nursing homes and will continue. I NEED YOUR HELP!
Who else needs books? Teenagers- Give a teenager a good book to read and it could change their life! Some of them never read only because we did not encourage them.
The homeless- they would love to read a good novel. But they cannot afford to buy even a thrift store book and neither can many teenagers.
The elderly would love to continue to broaden their horizens and be encourage to read. If you have any large print books that would be a benefit.
College Students: The cost of textbooks is outrageous, they sometimes are barely getting by and let alone cannot afford to buy a book over some food. They can use the library but to get some up to date new material is sometimes an impossible task for them. Their are many starving students out there!
